Memorial Day Parade returns to Sheboygan 

The annual Memorial Day Parade returns to Sheboygan this Monday with more than 40 local organizations participating.

The parade begins at 9 a.m. and will be taking the following route:

  • Start at 7th Street and Wisconsin Avenue
  • North on 7th Street to Superior Avenue
  • West on Superior to 9th Street
  • South on 9th Street to Fountain Park

A memorial ceremony will immediately follow the parade at Fountain Park. The ceremony will feature tributes to service men and women, musical performances and a moment of silence for those who have lost their lives in the line of duty.

The guest speaker will be retired Lieutenant Colonel Conrad Barrows, who is a native of Sheboygan. Following his South High School graduation, Conrad went on to graduate from Wake Forest University and Lakeland University. He served on active duty and retired a lieutenant colonel in the Army Reserve after 28 years.

A brat fry will also follow the parade at Fountain Park. All proceeds will go to The Stars and Stripes Honor Flight. The band Classic Racket will also perform in the park following the ceremony. 

A G.I. breakfast will precede the parade at 7 a.m. at the VFW Post 9156 at 552 S Evans St, Sheboygan. It is open to the public.

Lao, Hmong, and American Veterans Memorial Celebration to be held at Deland Park

The 12th annual Lao, Hmong, and American Veterans Memorial Celebration will be held in Deland Park beginning at 11:30 a.m. following the Memorial Day Parade in Sheboygan on Monday. The program includes the unveiling of a new engraved panel on the memorial honoring the Hmong veterans who fought in support of the US Forces in the Vietnam War. The names of three Hmong warriors will be added to the memorial.

The keynote speaker will be Air America Capt. Neil Hansen, a pilot for the CIA's airline, who flew many of the refugee Hmong people from Long Tieng to safety as the Pathet Lao was overtaking the country. Capt. Hansen was a pilot in Southeast Asia from 1964-1975. Hansen is an Oshkosh resident.

The Memorial Day program will be followed by a pigeon release ceremony, presented by the Sheboygan Pigeon Flying Club.

Wade House celebrates opening weekend

On May 26 and 27, visitors to the Wade House historic site in Greenbush will have the opportunity to enjoy spring traditions during Wade House’s opening weekend.

Join in as the Wade House celebrates the opening of its grounds for summer. Saturday only from 1 to 3 p.m., watch as the Merino-Cotswold sheep are shorn. Other on-going activities will include weaving on a hand loom, wool carding, spinning (Saturday only) and spring planting. 

Outdoor toys and games will be available for guests to play the pioneer way; visitors will get to roll hoops, play graces and walk on stilts. 

A visit to the site includes a tour of a stately, 27-room stagecoach hotel, the rumble of an up-and-down sway, the ring of the blacksmith’s anvil and an old-fashioned horse-drawn wagon ride. In the Wesley W. Jung Carriage Museum, guests will be introduced to Wisconsin’s largest collection of carriages and wagons. 

Visitors will begin the experience at the new Wade House Visitor Center and Wesley W. Jung Carriage Museum, W7965 State Highway 23.  Admission is: adults - $12; students/seniors (65+) - $10; children (5-17) - $6; children under 5 - free.
