HOWARDS GROVE - The owners of the Log Cabin Inn are carrying on a 47-year tradition by serving large-portion meals at family-friendly prices.

Owners Aaron and Jennifer Sloma, who purchased the Howards Grove restaurant from Georgia and Ruth Schoneman in 2014, are keeping with tradition in offering a cozy dining expierience with a north-woods feel.

“Our goal is to make our customers feel like they are dining at a cozy cabin up north,” manager Heidi Schaefer said.

You’ll find the heading “comfort food” on the menu, which boasts meatloaf, liver and onions, chicken pot pie, chicken fried steak and gravy, broasted chicken and Swiss steak.

Other items also fit the category, like jumbo ribeye steak, smothered chopped sirloin, barbecued ribs, broasted pork chops, shore lunch, grilled rainbow trout, and Leinenkugel’s beer battered walleye, shrimp and fish trio.

All dinners come with a choice of three sides from a list of 19 different options — seven of which are some form of potato. Log Cabin Inn’s potato pancakes rate in my top three for best tasting.

The house recipe chicken sausage and brat patties are made specially locally by Newton Meats.

Not everything stayed the same when the Sloma’s took over. New additions are locally-raised bison burger and elk steak sandwich, USDA choice steak options from Howards Grove Meat Market and in-house homemade desserts by Jennifer’s mother, to name a few.

The Leinenkugel’s beer battered trio was my "best tasting beer battered fish" choice when I did my tour de fish last March. I passed on this tempting choice for dinner this time, instead ordering the broasted pork chops and pot roast.

The thick cut pork chops were juicy and delicious, broasted to perfection. The sides I chose included the dinner salad, hot green beans and potato pancakes. The green beans were steamed perfectly, just right and a little crisp to the bite.

The potato pancake taste exactly like the one I ate last March; just the right amount of seasoning and grilled crisp. They are served with your choice of applesauce or Log Cabin syrup (of course).

My wife ordered the pot roast. The slowly roasted beef is presented in a pool of gooey gravy. It was tasty, tender and delicious.

For her sides, she chose the house salad, broasted potatoes and cottage cheese. The broasted potatoes were sliced in circles, not wedges. They seemed to cook up better and the taste was outstanding.

If you are looking for a great place to bring the family, come to the Log Cabin Inn and enjoy their large selection of breakfast, lunch and dinner options with “a price that doesn’t hit you over the head,” according to their website.
