Sheboygan alderman Kevin MatiChek appeared in court remotely via video teleconference Monday.

Kevin MatiChek, the fourth district Sheboygan alderman who has been charged with repeated child sexual assault, has resigned his seat.

The city clerk's office confirmed they received a letter from MatiChek Wednesday at 2:35 p.m. resigning his council seat. In the letter, MatiChek did not admit any guilt regarding the allegations against him, but said he was resigning because "I do not want the charge to detract from the City's business."

MatiChek was arrested Friday and has been charged with repeated sexual assault of a child, a felony for which he could be imprisoned 25 years. MatiChek's bond was set at $75,000. His preliminary hearing in that case is scheduled for Wednesday, Feb. 18.

While MatiChek's resignation letter will be read and filed at Monday's Common Council meeting, his name will still appear on the ballot come April.

MatiChek filed back in January to run for reelection to the seat. The only other challenger for that seat is Job Hou-Seye, a private security officer with Special Operations Detective Agency. Hou-Seye has run for public office numerous times over the last few years, but has never been elected.

MatiChek was first elected to the council in April 2011.
